Q& a With Ian Messenger From CatchMeKillMeProductions

I hope this is what you wanted! Please send me a link to this when you post it! Thanks!

-Ian

1. What was the fisrt thing (movie wise ) you have ever done?

The first thing I've ever done with film was actually The Hog. I've always wanted to make horror movies and one day I was talking to a former CMKM member Chris Hinton and I told him about always wanting to do something like this, he told me that he had a camera and I was a good writer... Then The Hog happened.

2. Do you like horror, zombie, monster, films the most?

All of those things are horror and I truly love them all. If I had to like a certain genre of horror the most it'd be anything dealing with a supernatural aspect.

3. What made you decide to become a directer?

I wanted to make good horror, I was sick of all the Korean horror films that were coming out and all of the remakes, I will say some of the remakes are good but there needed to be fresh ideas so I decided to start writing and who else could get my ideas on screen just how I imagined them other then me?

4. How did you become involved with the horror genre?

I've always liked horror, it's always been something I've wanted to do. It first started with short stories which received some pretty heavy acclaim, people compared my writing to Clive Barker and Stephen King. I was blown away by the response, really.

5. What is the first script you have ever written & what was it about?

I can't go too deep into this as it's still something I plan on doing one day but I will tell you it was a slasher film, well, kind of.

6. How do you begin a script?

I never start a script until I have at least 50% of it all planned out in my head. It all starts with an idea.

7. What is some of the processes involved in making a short film come to life?

With the most recent one the process was huge and long. It obviously began with the forming of the idea and then the writing of the screenplay. Then I moved onto getting the main cast and crew first, once I had that locked in then I had to get a permit to shut down an entire city street that night of filming... then we had to get all of the zombies for that big scene near the end of the movie.

8. Who are some of the people you have worked with in the past?

It's all been CatchMeKillMe, everyone you see in the past films has something to do with the current films. At this point I haven't really had to reach out to work with anyone else.

9. How many films have you worked on so far?

I've done three films and we're currently going into our fourth, which will also be our longest.

10.How did the name CatchMeKillMeProductions come to be?

I have no idea, honestly. We were kicking around production company names and I said something like, "What do slashers want to do? Catch me and kill me..." I just dropped the "and" and pushed the words together and there you have it.

The following Questions are about the short film "The Day The World Went Away"

11. What inspired you to come up with idea for this short film?

The bond between a parent and their child and how most parents would really go to the ends of the earth to protect their child. I just needed a never-ending onslaught of horror for the Trent character to face in the movie so I chose the zombie apocalypse.

12. How long did it take to write the script?

It took me just around 2 days, that includes script editing. It's a relatively short script so it didn't take too long.

13. What is the process of searching for the right actor/actress combination for this particular script?

They needed to be able display a lot of heart in their performance.

14. Who choreographed the fight sequences with the zombies?

The actor who played Roland, Charles Messenger did a lot of work as we were filming, really trying to get that scene to come off well in the movie.

15. Why was then scene cut where he smashed the zombie head in?

Originally the scene was to cut right before I made contact with the zombies head, the editor said it didn't flow well with the rest of the movie so he cut it out.

16. Who did the great make up work on the film?

Charles Messenger, Jennifer Kelly, Bill Messenger, Veronica Grosinsky, and Dan Koesser. Without these guys and their amazing talent our zombies would've been pretty lame!

17. What are some of your majore influences when writng a script or directing a film like this?

My influence when it comes to filmmaking is Adam Green, absolutely.

18. What made you decide to focus on the story more than fighting w/ zombies?

I wanted to show that a zombie movie could have heart, I mean, people just always think these movies are about eating brains and blowing off dead peoples heads. I wanted to go deeper then that.

19. What are some ideas for possible projects in the future?

Well, I guess this would be the place to announce it, we're actually currently working on a few things right now. Up first, fans should expect a director's cut of "The Day The World Went Away" and then we're going into "The Afflicted" which is going to be a lot different then everything else we've done so far. "The Afflicted" will also be our longest film to date, running somewhere around thirty minutes.

20. How can fans learn more about CatchMeKillMe productions & future projets?

20 QUESTIONS WITH FUTURE SCREAM QUEEN JENIFER KELLY

"20 Questions With A Future Scream Queen"

My email Q&A with future Scream Queen & star of the movie "The Day The World Went Away"  Actress/Makeup artist Jennifer Kelly.

1. How long have you been an actress?
I have acted here and there since 1995.

2.What was your first job as an actress?Ha-Ha, if you count grade school it was a lamb in a play. Otherwise it was for the University of Wisconsin communications department.

3. Which came first being an actress or a make up artist? In college I had to learn both at the same time, but I acted first.

4. What made you decide to become an actress?
I decided when I was about 3 years old. I used to dress up, write and act out plays in front of my family. I attempted to sing as well. That was not a good idea.

5. How did you first get involved in movies?
When I was in seventh grade, my dad was a big movie fan. We use to watch horror movies and critique them. My brother and I would try to see who could get
scared first.

6. You are currently employed by catchmekillmeproductions, right?
I’m not employed in the traditional sense, but I do work with them.

7. How did you end up involved in the process of the companies movie making?I actually met the company’s director on twitter and reviewed one of their movies, The Hog.
8. What was the first job you had with them?I was the Zombie make up artist for them and played a main Zombie in the movie The Day the Earth Went Away.
9. What is the process of being hired by a production company? You must sell yourself to the company. You have to show you are interested in working with them. This takes a lot of time researching and trying to get the attention of the company. Then you have to show your work. After that you must prove your worthy of working with them. If the director thinks you suck, you’re out. So far I think the director likes me or he would have told me to take a hike. Of course at any time I can be out. It is a cut throat business. If I can’t get the work done well or act well, there is always someone better out there.
10. What is like when you work on a movie? There is a lot of down time when you are not acting or applying makeup or prosthetics. I use that time to talk to others on the set, or read the script. I also try to help in any way I can. When you work for a small company you must be multi talented.
11. What type of make up artist are you?My specialty has been zombies. Of course now everyone does zombie makeup. Horror makeup is what I enjoy, but will do fantasy or any other types.
12. What was the first job you ever had as a make up artist?I worked backstage for musicals and plays in Madison Wisconsin. My two specialties were making people look old and applying eyeliner to the men. For some reason they trusted me not to poke them in the eyes. Ha-ha
13. How long have you been a make up artist?I’ve been a makeup artist since 1995
14. What made you decide to be a make up artist?I found I was good at it and it was not difficult to learn. I took a couple of classes in college and really enjoyed it.
15. How easy is it for to transition from make up artist to actress? It’s not hard. However, in the last movie I did, I was still applying makeup to zombies when I was suppose to be acting so it can be a bit interesting trying to get into character when you have no time to prepare.
16. What are some of the differences between the two jobs?I don’t feel as in control acting as I do with the makeup. Applying the makeup I know what the outcome is. With acting, I can’t see the final outcome until after editing. If I mess something up I can’t go back and fix it. I can with the makeup. I can add or make it look different for the camera. Sometimes it is hard to tell what will look good in front of the camera so you have to play with the makeup a bit.
17. If you could work with any actor/actress of your choice, who would it be?Eli Roth, Bruce Campbell, Michelle Rodriguez, Uma Thurman, Quentin Tarantino, however, I would be happy to work with anyone!
18. What is the worst job you have ever had?In film? I have loved all of my experiences which are pretty limited, no matter what happened. There is always something that happens. The most uncomfortable time was when I had a bikini on and had to act like I was at the beach. The temperature was about 35 degrees and the audio kept have issues. By the time I was done by lips, toes and fingers were blue.
19. Do you have a fan club yet? That would be great! I wish!  I have people who follow me on twitter and my family, but no fan club.
20. What would you be doing today if you weren't involved in movies?I do have an actual job. I have two degrees that I put to use but my passion is movies. I am not able to make a living doing movies yet. Until then I have to pay the bills. I would have been a professional dancer though if I would have been able to pursue that.

Email interview with Monstermatt Patterson

Monstermatt
Dear MonsterMatt Patterson,
I would like to thank you in advance for allowing me to talk with you. I just have a few questions. First of all though let me get the basics out of the way.
Thanks to facebook I got all the basics. lol
You are the author of
"Monstermatt's Bad Monster Jokes Vol.1,illustrated by Kyle Kaczmarczyk .Published by MayDecemberPublications.
You write for Horrornews.net.
You also write for Zombie Ink Comics.
You have a handful of micro budget horror film credits ,as mask-maker,sculptor,or actor.

1. What made decide to call yourself MonsterMatt?

I guess my love for monsters would play into that decision. But,it's truly something I identify with. It's not a character or anything. You've got my real name, and my love.Consider it my "verbal stamp",or tag line. When I do an audio clip,it sounds right."This is Monstermatt Patterson, ghoul night."I have a little  college radio  experience, and it works in that linguistic setting,as well as written works.

2. What made you decide to sculpt as a form physical therapy?

That was purely  by chance. After my shoulder surgery,it was a lot of grueling physical therapy.I was progressing, but needed hand strengthening/control.I was told to try squeezing play d'oh or clay, and I created a small face, out of boredom. The rest just kind of happened.

3. Was monster sculptures your original intentions , or did the idea come to you later on?

Monsters.I wanted some of the old Don Post type masks found in the back of Famous Monsters magazine, for myself.I never intended it to turn into anything beyond that.

4. What was the first mask you ever sculpted?

That would be a Lon Chaney Jr. Wolfman. It was a half mask, with synthetic wig hair pressed in,and separately sculpted teeth, cast in resin. It's still among my favorites.

Prior to that ,a month after my surgery,I made The Fly,from the Vincent Price film.It wasn't a sculpt. It was my ice hockey helmet, with pasta strainers ,for fly eyes, bolted to it.It had paint, latex, plastic bags.I even made a claw out of a 3liter pop bottle, cut up and painted black, with more latex, and fake fur.

I did that with my arm still in a sling ,stabilized against my torso. It was very painful to do.But,I was so determined to do it.

You can't imagine how thrilled I was, when it  got used in a short film, called "Leftovers".

5. I realize you have been creating monster-mask for a while now, do you have a technique you use to make an idea come to life?

That depends on what the project is.I'm always doodling/sketching.So,sometimes I make a sketch, not necessarily conscious of a what it could be ,in a three dimensional(mask)form.

With sculpts I did for films ,it was sculpt, then send a progress picture from my phone, for fairly instant feedback, from the directors.
In this regard,we are lucky to have smart phones,to speed the process along. One emailed picture, sent three different directions, works wonders!

I also like using photo references.Perhaps something in a nature book will catch my eye.I'll incorporate that somehow into the sculpt. It may not  get noticed for what it's based on,but it's in there.

6. How long does it normally take you to finish a project?

When I first started,I was so tentative.Every sculpt took forever. But,I find that I'm getting quicker. It also depends on the complexity of the sculpture .
The ZombieClown mask I'm working on,will be clocked in at 5 hours of sculpting.I've never done something that quickly. But,it just went so easily.
Some of my previous sculpts ,were 30-40 hours. But again,I think having more experience helps.
7. What are some of the materials you use to make MonsterMatt's Monster Mask?

WED clay, which is water based. It air dries.I really like it,it's very convenient.
Acrylic inks,mask paint(latex based),mask latex,gypsum stone for the molds(hydrocal).Burlap,for the mold.Coffee.Gallons of coffee.
8. What do you do if you make a mistake during the initial stages of the creation process?

If it's the sculpture part ,I go in and resculpt,or try to balance the overall piece.Once it's molded,if there's a mistake that can't be corrected,it's back to square one.

If it's the paint job,it can be painted over and started again.
Not fun by any means, but things do happen.

9. If you could work with any actor/actress who would it be?

Gary Oldman. He's quite amazing! He has a chameleon like ability.Even when he's low key,he gets your attention.

10. I f you could work with any Iconic Horror personality, who would you most like to work with and why?

Christopher Lee,because he has the ability to portray sinister and gentleman at the same time.He has an almost regal presence, that I think  it is an effortless, second nature to him.

If I were to answer my phone, and it was Mr.Lee,I'd probably turn white! Can you imagine it?
"Hello,may I speak with a Mr.Monstermatt?This is Mr.Christopher Lee,you know,Dracula?"(and white I go!)

11. What inspired you to write"Monstermatt's Bad Monster Jokes Vol.1" ?

I was gaining an audience online for my jokes.I had a few wonderful pun exchanges with Lloyd Kaufman,Joe Moe,Tomb Dragomir, and Debbie Rochon.
It was at that point, people really started suggesting I write a book of these bad jokes. The rest is unfolding as we go.Every step is a new, wonderful, experience for me.I consider myself very lucky!

Also, outside of the jokes within the stories(films, book's,etc.),there isn't really any humor with horror that's not completely dark, and somewhat morbid. There's a place and audience  for that ,too.I  also enjoy it.But,I  like the old school,Borscht Belt approach.Zingers,puns,etc.
Something accessible to everyone. The more I did it,the more I found people seemed to find themselves enjoying the jokes.

12. How long have you been working on it?

I've been writing jokes for over a year. But ,the book itself, just a handful of months.
We were looking for a publisher as I just kept writing jokes. When we finally got one,it was kind of a "lock and load" type of situation.
Kyle turned into a drawing dynamo!Wowing both the publisher and I with every drawing! He really outdid himself!

13. Where do you get the jokes from?

I love word play.I find things leap out at me from text, whether it's a film synopsis or book, etc.
Then it's kind of breaking down and reassembling things.
Monsters and horror are full of beautiful possibilities.I find the oddest combinations sometimes. But,they work.Maybe it's the sheer absurdity, that makes it work?

14. What is the inspiration for your jokes?

Mad Magazine,Cracked Magazine,Famous Monsters Magazine,The Hilarious House of Frightenstein,The Three Stooges,Warner Brothers cartoons,Dave Allen at Large,Benny Hill,Mel Brooks,Troma,Abbott and Costello monster films,Dr.Demento,newspaper comics,etc...

I love humor. All varieties. From Howard Stern to Jack Benny.I will seek out a laugh.I'm drawn to it.

15. What is the worst monster joke you know?

Q:What do you call a Monster, that can speak more than one language?

A:Bilinghoul

16. Will "Monstermatt's Bad Monster Jokes Vol.1" be available everywhere or just to certain markets?

It will be everywhere. It's on Amazon.com,now.There will be more to come, like Barnes&Noble,Borders, etc.
17. Are you currently working on a second book?

I finished scripting a three part comicbook series for Kyle's company-ZombieInkComics.
It's called "Wolff's Run".It's set during the Prohibition Era.It has a Werewolf,or two,crime ,corruption,rum runners,old time gangsters.It's written for the Monster fan!

I've got some other story ideas coming, for either comic books, novels,or film scripts.I'm considering a horror  script for an audio broadcast, like the old Shadow radio stories.
18. If so, will it be a second Volume of bad monster jokes?

I haven't stopped writing the bad jokes(don't really think I could if I tried),and if people enjoy the book.If they want a follow up.It will happen.
I've had such a great time working with Kyle and MayDecemberPublications on this, seeing this all come together,I'd have to!
19. Do you have an official fan club?

No.Nothing like that.If someone wanted to start one, they are more than welcome to.
I do have a fan base, though.I call everyone my Maniacs!

20. Where can fans send fan mail?

Right to the website:
There is a page to contact me.
You can follow me on twitter,@1monstermatt.
That's usually my playground.
Thank you so much ,for having me!
Take Care,Maniacs!
